What We Install in San Francisco

Evolution Solar installs solar panels, home battery storage and roofing for San Francisco homeowners. We have completed projects from the Outer Richmond to Bernal Heights, and we run our own crews rather than handing signed contracts to a subcontractor.

San Francisco is not suburban solar. Roofs are smaller, steeper and more complicated, lots are narrow, buildings share walls, and a great many properties are two-to-four units, TICs or condos where the roof is not straightforwardly one person's to use. Add fire-department access requirements and, on some blocks, planning review for anything visible from the street.

Microclimate matters more here than almost anywhere else in the Bay Area. A roof in the Sunset does not produce what an identical roof produces in the Mission, and a system designed off a national average will disappoint. We model production for the specific address rather than the city.

Working With PG&E

San Francisco is Pacific Gas & Electric territory, so solar here interconnects under PG&E's rules and California's current net-metering tariff. The wrinkle that comes up constantly in San Francisco is metering on multi-unit buildings: how a system is interconnected depends on whether the building has one meter or several, and who is entitled to the production. That question should be settled during design, not after the panels are on the roof.

San Francisco Permitting

San Francisco permits residential solar through the Department of Building Inspection, and eligible systems can be approved through SolarAPP+, the automated review platform — three of our completed San Francisco projects were permitted that way. Not everything qualifies: fire-department roof access and setback requirements apply citywide, and buildings in certain districts draw additional review for equipment visible from the street. We prepare the submittal, handle the process and meet the inspector.

"I recently chose Evolution Solar for my solar installation, and the experience exceeded my expectations. After seeing their quality work on my neighbor's home last October, I reached out to George, who patiently explained the process and provided a detailed quote... Despite initially hesitating, I revisited Evolution Solar when PGE announced new fees for solar customers March this year..."

Paul Hsu

"We used Evolution solar for our solar panels almost a year ago. The process was fast and easy, and any questions we had were promptly answered. In fact, any questions we've had since having then installed have been answered promptly. They were very friendly, professional, and they handled everything that needed to be done with the city and pg&e. I highly recommend then"
